If you speak with master salespeople or the average salesperson on this topic you will get a totally different answer most of the time, based on the group you are dealing with. The interesting thing is, each answer will be in perfect alignment with their level of personal success. This is because control is at the heart of success in the selling business. Here’s what I mean.
When sales managers or sales trainers speak of ‘control’, most often they are referring to salespeople controlling the prospect, controlling the sales cycle, controlling their behavior with customers, even controlling their emotions. All those opportunities for ‘control’ do have their own particular place in sales training. However, none are even remotely as important as determining “Who is in Control of Your Selling Career?”. Why? Because just as the other ‘control’ areas determine power over the situation, control of your own career, income level and quality of your life is the one power area where you can never give up complete control if you hope to reach the pinnacle of success.
Sales Masters have recognized this basic truth. They understand that their personal advancement rests almost entirely with their efforts, their enthusiasm and passion, their integrity, their willingness to learn and their willingness to accept total responsibility for their lives at all levels. You will not see these masters surrendering control ie: their personal power, to anyone.
This means that they do not look outside themselves to someone else to provide motivation, opportunity, training, a pay raise or even recognition, because they are always in control. They are inter-dependent because both sides benefit in the relationship with their employer.
On the other hand, the average under-achieving salesperson will often give away his or her personal power to someone else. They are then ‘dependent’ on the other for career advancement. That’s not a healthy or profitable situation.
If you are a salesperson in many organizations today, you might be a very long time waiting for motivation, praise, effective sales training or a pay increase from someone ‘out there’. Therefore, it is imperative that you take total control of your selling career now. After all is said and done, getting paid is good, isn’t it?
Dependent or inter-dependent, personal power or no personal power, you get to choose.
