Almost every worker wants to be promoted and be in charge of more subordinates. However, the more people you supervise, the greater the headache and the more the tension you have to endure.
Now at last count (July 2007) the Census Bureau has estimated that the world has 6,602,224,175 (6.6 billion) people. That’s a lot of people to supervise. This leads me to think that perhaps He, the Creator, the Supreme or whatever you may call Him has the most difficult and surely the worst job in the world.
For supervising 6.6 billion people He is entitled to the following compensation package:
1. Salary: Zero.
2. Vacations: Zilch.
3. Sick time: Nada.
4. Working Hours; 24/7
5. Working Conditions: Rated 1 (out of a possible 10).
6. Recognition and Gratitude: Also rated 1 (out of a possible 10).
Now a clarification for Item 5, working conditions. Why is this rated so low? Quite simply, all the subordinates are continuously fighting amongst themselves, they are involved in petty politics and are jealous of each other. Very often some of them are trying to kill the others. This is not an environment conducive to job satisfaction, and working condition is therefore rated at 1, the lowest score.
What about item 6? We are always asking Him for all types of breaks or favors. Sometimes, two people who are competing or fighting each other (e.g. for an award or championship) both pray to win, which must create an agonizing dilemma. However, there is very little recognition when He does do something favorable. When something good happens, the sub-ordinates attribute it to their own hard work and intelligence. However, when things go wrong, it is considered to be the will of their supervisor. So there is little recognition but plenty of blame. As far as gratitude is concerned, forget about it. The subordinates are very polite for small courtesies extended by anyone but have no gratitude for their very existence and life’s blessings.
So what do you say folks, shall we give Him a break? Do I hear a faint hearted, grudging and reluctant “yes”? Anyway, it is better than a NO. So, let us go ahead and do our (faint-hearted) best. After all, we do live in a democracy, raise the minimum wage every few years and provide sundry worker protections, so this is long overdue. Obviously, we can’t do anything about items 1 through 4, but perhaps we can do something about #5 and #6.
To improve his working conditions (item 5), we can try having a little consideration for our fellow human beings. Those who like to kill can make do by simply cursing each other, and those who like to curse can try to be silent, while those who are silent now, can try to find something praiseworthy about their compatriots. This way, everyone can do his little bit and no-one feels a big strain. But perhaps that is too much to ask.
Now coming to recognition and gratitude (item 6), we can try to express a little thanks now and then for any blessings and achievements that come our way. Of course some of us may counter that the successes were due to their own intelligence and hard work, but then the question arises as to who gave them that intelligence and from whom came that capacity for hard work. So let us not be niggardly (in this respect), and actually show some respect. After all, when any of our fellowmen performs even the slightest courtesy for us, we respond with an immediate expression of thanks. So, perhaps we should thank Him the same way; it is only good manners.
Of course we can go one step further. While an “expression” of thanks is good manners of speech, actually “being” thankful goes much deeper and is good manners of the heart. This is the difference between showing respect and actually feeling respectful, or professing love and actually being a loving person. If we can drop our egos for a while and reach the state of thankfulness, it would really raise the Rating on item #6. Incidentally, when we are feeling thankful, we might feel spiritually complete. This feeling of being thankful would drive away all feelings of hate and jealousy towards our fellow men, since two opposite feelings cannot exist at the same time (see note). This improvement in item 6 (thankfulness), would also vastly improve the rating for working conditions (item 5).
So what do you say folks, should we give Him a break?
(Note: The only exception to this rule is Beauty Contest winners, who can cry and smile simultaneously.)
