Phishing is a way for the hackers to get your private and confidential information by sending emails to you or using bogus websites. The emails will say that it comes from a reputable bank and you need to verify your account or to enter some information so they will unlock your account. In the email, they will also provide you the link where you should go to update your banking information.
This link does not point to the official website. Instead, it’ll point you to a bogus website and if you enter your login information, the hackers will get it. Another way for the phishers to get your information is by providing a link to the real website but on that website, there will be a pop-up and information entered in the pop-up window can be stolen.
Recently I received an email from a bank asking me to update my payment information. This is clearly a bogus email because I don’t have any account on that bank. The email said something about my account was blocked and I need to enter my bank login information. However, I already have two filter tools and decided to give the tools a test by clicking the link provided in the email.
To my expectation, the two tools manage to block the website without any problem. I cannot open the website because the filters warned me about the website and blocked it from me. At first, only one tool was blocking it and this tool was giving me a warning to not to open the website. However, I would like to test the second tool if it’s working because at that time, only the first tool was blocking me from visiting the website and therefore I decided to ignore the warning and continue to view the website.
The second tool acted and blocked me from viewing it. The two tools work and it work perfectly. I have two lines of defense from bogus websites and if the first tool cannot block it, the second tool will warn and block me from viewing it.
The first tool that blocked me from viewing the malicious website is Internet Explorer 7 phishing filter and the second tool is McAfee Site Advisor. This new feature in Internet Explorer 7 has helped many people from visiting bogus websites. McAfee Site Advisor is also a very good tool and I recommend it to anyone who browses the Internet frequently.
You’ll be surprised that most of the search results from the search engines are mark as ‘red sites’ by McAfee Site Advisor. It’s because the websites maybe spam websites or the download from the websites are ‘red downloads’. Another reason why the websites are categorized as ‘red sites’ because it has links to another ‘red sites’.
These tools can help protecting you from visiting malicious websites. Download these tools so you can browse the Internet securely.
