One of the most widely popular materials that seamlessly combine form and function is granite. Beautiful and durable, granite is sophisticated, sleek, and effortlessly beautiful; but it is also expensive. The cost alone often makes granite an inconceivable choice for homeowners. Luckily, there is a way to get the look of granite without the expensive price tag - with a faux granite countertop.
A faux granite countertop can actually be achieved with little more than an inexpensive spray material. Available at most home improvement retailers - and even craft stores - this spray is often offered for less than $25. Such spray includes textured paint that will give you the look of natural stone without the cost and mess associated with replacing the countertops in your kitchen.
To begin, find the spray that will best work for your design needs and budget. Be sure to purchase enough in the beginning; there’s nothing worse that being stuck in the middle of a project having run out of spray. And it’s always at these times that you will not be able to find the same spray in the store.
It is the best idea to spray this material outside. But if you are unable to remove it then remove all other material from the kitchen and cover the floors. Clean it with a warm cloth and allow to dry completely.
After it has completely dried, tackle the surface with a light sandpaper. The purpose of this is not to remove the finish but rather to rough it up so that the paint has something to which to adhere. Finally, tape off all areas that you do not want to be covered with spray including wall surfaces adjacent to the top of the countertop.
Use a grey primer on the surface to be painted, spraying it evenly. The use of a primer will help the faux paint stick to the surface and reduce running. Spray evenly and let dry completely, and then once dry you can start spraying on your faux. Holding the can 10 to 12 inches away from the surface use a misting technique starting at one end and working towards the other.
This process should be repeated until at least three coats have been properly applied. Once dry, or after about 30 minutes, apply a spray on clear coat sealer. Several coats are recommended in order to allow the faux granite countertop to be cleaned as normal. Otherwise, without this coating, the paint will wear off over time.
