The answer may surprise you-there are advantages to both ebooks and traditional books so most authors should have both! You will reach different audiences with each in some cases, and in others your buyers will purchase both. In fact, a strategy that starts with an ebook and then a book could be the best solution of all.
An ebook give you instant credibility on line, is faster and easier to produce, and will put a lot more money on your pocket than a traditional book. When you write a traditional book and use a traditional publisher to distribute it, you are lucky to make $1 a book. But on the Internet, your ebook will net you almost pure profit (about 97% of the money will go straight to you.)
A traditional book on the other hand still has more cache. It takes longer to produce because it must be printed and it can take up to two years to get it out-if you can get a deal. And, in that time, the information could become obsolete. So if you are going to write a traditional book it’s best to stick to subjects that don’t change rapidly and/or don’t print more copies than you know you can sell so you don’t get stuck with books that are worthless!
It also depends on your target market. Some markets expect and desire a physical book. Any business that comes face to face with their customers is probably going to want to give them a physical book. Also, a book on something like credit repair , for example, is preferable to an ebook because those buying it may not have a credit card that they can use to purchase online and not know how to use a service like Paypal. Also some target markets simply don’t use the Internet that much and so you will have to sell offline to them with a book.
A book is also given more weight in the speaking arena. If you want to be paid a lot of money to speak, it helps to have a best-selling book! It’s harder to track sales with an ebook and again, it doesn’t have the same prestige.
But whether you want to write an ebook to put a lot more cash in your pocket, or as a testing ground for a book it’s a great place to start in most niches. Then once you’ve made money with it you can decide if it makes sense to do a print book as well. And the great thing is that by starting with the ebook, you’ll be able to pay for your book printing and be in a much better position to decide if you want to publish it yourself or go with a traditional publisher.
