A Basic Shot

No comment - Post a comment

In today’s game, it appears as if people do not care enough about their free throw shooting. It is a basic shot and something that can be learned and perfected. This of course requires a lot of practice and technique learning. If you learn the right technique, it can help your free throw percentage. Some players have a very good arch on the shot and it improves the chance of it going in. Some players like Shaq have a horrible shot arch and do not use full extension of the arms. Players that are free throw experts are calm and collective and are used to making shots when needed.

When you look at players who are good at free throw shooting, they are usually good jump shot shooters. Players that do not have much of a jump shot, usually have a weaker free throw percentage. The reason for this is because of size. Players that are 7 feet have a harder angle to shot from. They may be too strong to shoot a shot and may miss because of that. Big men as a result have lower free throw percentages. If you look at guards, they usually have a higher free throw percentage. Players such as Steve Nash, have a career free throw of about 90 percentages! This means that in practice, Steve is probably able to make most of his shots. It is something that comes easily and naturally to him.

Being a good free throw shooting team can help build success. Players would make free throws at a high percentage make defenders think twice about fouling them. They know that most of the time, it will be 2 more points for the other team. To add on, if you make your free throws, it puts more pressure on the opposing team near the end of the game. They know that they will not be able to make up points if they keep fouling you. Being a good free throw shooter requires a lot of dedication. Players who are not good at this can improve by putting in more effort and time. Dwight Howard once said that he would not leave practice unless he was able to hit ten free throws in a row.

In today’s game, there is a lot of flashy play that makes free throw shooting seem unattractive. After all, what is so interesting about making an uncontested shot? Well, tell those that whine when they can’t make it.
