Last year, we saw one of the best scoring seasons of all time. It was the first time three players have averaged over 30 points for the season. Lebron James, Allen Iverson and Kobe Bryant each averaged over 30 with Kobe averaging 35 points! When we talk about a scoring champion, that average is usually near the upper 20’s and sometimes 30. 30 points is a lot even for Michael Jordan, who is a pure scorer. What makes it even harder to believe is that all of these players did it while doing much more for the team. Lebron James was able to average almost 7 assists and rebounds, and Allen Iverson helped distribute the ball. Was there ever real competition for the scoring title?
It was not noticed until around the halfway point of the season those 3 players were averaging 30 points. Gilbert Arenas almost averaged 30, finishing with 29.3 points per game. It appears as if each player was motivated by themselves to do what was best for the team. They never really thought about the scoring title, well, lebron didn’t. However, Allen Iverson and Kobe were battling for the scoring title. It appeared as if Kobe had a small lead but would make it a larger one by scoring 81 points and by putting on showing shows. Even Allen Iverson, a scoring expert could not beat him. The last player to average 35 points since Kobe is Michael Jordan. Jordan had averaged an unheard of 37 points in his third season with the bulls. To make this fact sound crazy, Wilt Chamberlain averaged 50 something points one year, topping 4,000 points in the year! Players are lucky to even score 2000 points in a season, something Larry Bird only did 4 times.
Kobe Bryant went on to win another scoring title this year by averaging almost 32 points. He put on an amazing show where he scored 50 points straight for several games. Kobe has a complete game, is able to penetrate and to score from deep. Kobe has shown that he is perhaps the best perimeter scorer in NBA history, something Wilt is not. Wilt would accumulate most of his points near the basket. To put something else into the topic, is this much scoring needed? If two players were to average 18 points, it would probably be better than one player averaging 24. Team work beats all but it is great to have a good scoring threat.
