Here’s an application of the 80/20 Principle that not only makes sense… it can make you time, energy, money and bring fulfilment too. That is if you dare to use it to your full eccentric and idiosyncratic potential!

There’s no doubt that there are chunks of time in life which are far, far more enjoyable and productive than others. And conversely, that there are chunks of time when you have to work incredibly hard to achieve not very much. And yet overall you probably behave as though that’s entirely untrue, as though all time and all energy is equal.

Do you always find yourself doing numerous tasks at the last minute? Does the sight of voluminous paperwork make you feel swamped, eventually leading you to put them off for “just a few more minutes”? Does the word deadline unfailingly give you panic attacks?

If you answered in the affirmative to any of the questions mentioned above, then you are undeniably guilty of wasting a precious resource— time. Like most people, you may get a rush out of beating the clock and submitting your work, although sloppily done, on time. This chronic battle waged during crunch time invariably leads to the ubiquitous raccoon eyes and zits popping uncontrollably all over your face. And as you continue to cope with the nervewracking pressure of accomplishing so much in so little time, your once gentle personality mutates into a hideous monster.

Have you ever seen Joe Versus the Volcano? I watched it the other night and it made me think. “Why do we have to get shaken out of our stupor with a near death event or a tragic event to decide to live our lives the way we want?”

Why do you want to go throughout life living it with less vitality, fun, ambition and adventure than you are capable of? I don’t know, but we all do it to some degree. We all have an area of our lives that we spend time doing or being a part of when we would rather be, do or have something else.

Do you know people who like to “shoot from the hip” or “live for the moment”? They take pride in their lack of goals and plans, almost wearing it as a badge of freedom. However, I suspect if you looked behind that badge, you would find a lack of focus and discipline and an inability to accomplish daily goals.

If that is how you run your life, that’s okay. But, if you have goals, dreams, or achievement in mind, the strategy of “shooting from the hip” is more likely to miss than hit. Additionally, vague and broad objectives such as “I want to make lots of money” or “I would like to be more disciplined spiritually” aren’t likely to get you where you want to go either.
