I recently sat at my desk listening to a recorded conference call by Dr. Ellie Drake, another network marketing professional. It was an effective teleconference about developing listening skills and learning to connect to people with ease. The crux of the training call was the art of empathic listening.

Empathic listening requires you to ask a question and WAIT for the answer. But while you’re waiting, you’re LISTENING with the intent to understand, not with the intention of replying. Did you catch that? Listen with the intent to understand. Don’t listen with the intent to reply. This means not thinking about what you want to say while your prospect is talking. It means to really focus on the words they are saying and what is going on in their mind. Without judging. Listen to their words, watch their body language, and focus on the speaker completely.

In the past some of the most professional entrepreneurs were people who worked as doctors, or accountant,s or lawyers, or engineers. To get to that level in these professions these entrepreneurs had to sacrifice a tremendous amount of time and money early in their career.

This included the amount of time spent going to college as well as building a clientele. Once they opened up their own business it also meant they were possibly deeply in debt and spent much of their early careers repaying things like college loans.

How to Combat the Bad Reputation of MLM

Today’s MLM or Direct Marketing carries the weight of many ill conceived notions and negative connotations. Much of this bad press in the MLM industry comes from within the industry itself.

How can that be? We all remember our parents telling us that our Actions speak louder than words and that is the main way that we have created this negative view from the general population in regard to direct marketing.
