Carlo finally arrived in Wakayama and to his surprise, they knew he was coming…and that was not all…

It was in 1962 that mom and dad started welcoming exchange students into their home. The first was from Indonesia, followed by Argentina, Brazil and then several short stays from Japan and China. They even had a young man stay for two years from Canada and although that was not quite what most of us might consider a “foreign country”; he was treated no different than any other foreign student. Both mom and dad found it to be almost a new lease on life. My brother and I were both off to college or off to “life” and this helped them keep the nest from feeling empty while doing their part to educate the world. 34 students later they finally decided it was time to rest in the old arm chair. I have often thought that had they not stopped they may still be kicking the bed post.

Carlo finally arrived in Wakayama and he was anxious while at the same time having cold feet. He hadn’t a plan, knew no one, and although just finished learning Japanese he was not confident at all…

I’m working on a new book which I hope to announce soon. It is entitled, “Morphing Into the Real World - The Handbook for Entering the Work Force,” the purpose of which is to educate our youth in terms of making the transition from the safety of Mom and Dad and schools, to the bitter realities of the real world. One of the key points I make time and again in the book is that people act on perceptions. These perceptions could be based on reality or on something imagined. In other words, we may perceive a situation correctly or incorrectly; right or wrong.
