In this article I will reveal useful fishing tips, starting with what you should bring, what types of fishes you should aim for, and were you can find them.
The equipment, unless you are a true fan of your own will be easy to get. Most places were you can fish provide baits, rigs, reels and anything else you might need.
I’ve made a selection of the main fishes we have, from both salt and fresh water.
Marlin
You will find the blue marlin, white marlin and stripped marlin around the pacific coast, off shore. Blue marlins in Costa Rica can average around 300 pounds, although there have been cases of much larger prizes. White 150 and stripped 90.
Sailfish
You will find the sailfish no the pacific coast. It’s off shore fishing and the average is 90 pounds although like the marlin there have been cases of sailfish off the scale.
Yellow fin tuna
You can fin yellow fin tuna off shore on the pacific; their average size is around 40 pounds.
Tarpon
Silver king tarpon is the biggest fish you’ll find on the Atlantic. They have an average weight of 60 pounds but they can reach up to 50 pounds. You can find them inshore, on rivers near the sea and salt water lagoons.
Snook
You will find snook on both Atlantic and Pacific coasts, inshore just like the tarpon. We have the World Record with 52 pounds near Tulin River, but their average is around 25 pounds.
Rooster fish
You will find rooster fish near reefs, off shore and inshore on the Pacific, with an average of 25 pounds.
Snapper
There are two types of snappers, red snapper (10 pounds average) and the cubera snapper (20 pounds average.). Both can be found in the pacific inshore.
Wahoo
It’s an off shore fish, on the pacific coast with an average of 30 pounds, if you are lucky you might get one over 75 pounds.
Dorado
The Dorado can be found in the pacific, off shore, with an average of 40 pounds.
Guapote
This fish, also known as the rainbow bass can be found in fresh water, especially no the Arenal volcano lake. Weights around 5 pounds and we also have the world record of 12 pounds.
IGFA, the International Game Fish Association considers Costa Rica one of their top fishing spots in the world, and we have over 80 world records here. So there isn’t much to discuss, just come on over and lets start fishing.
